he just got back from baseball training camp in las vegas, where he won all sorts of awards for his skills, including one for throwing 10 straight strikes to a major league catcher.

Hey Baby. Wanna See My Wine Cellar?

since i picked up this wine habit, i've managed to amass a small collection of wines that are worth holding onto for a while. it's nothing huge, but too much for the 12-bottle rack in the living room and the second 12'er i've kept in the pantry. so i devised a scheme to build some storage into the back of the pantry, under the stairs.

the air in there is always cool and dry, and generally as good for wine storage as any of the "refrigerator" style units you can buy. so, i told kimmy i was going to the hardware store to buy some lumber. at which point she said "you're a dick," and gave me my christmas present early.

she'd gotten me this modular shelving system that you can put together in any kind of shape and size. each set includes enough to store 40 bottles. so last night i put it together, and here's how it looks ...



so, anyway, it's only about half-full now. but i'm sure it won't be long before i need another set to expand. whenever you come over, ask for a tour. it's nice and dark and cramped. baby.

Excuses, Excuses

i've been taking a lot of flack (again) for my recent lack of updates. it's understandable. i realize that i've become like a god to many of you, and that you're not happy without your daily BENediction ... ooh, BEN-Addiction is even cooler.

here are my excuses, in no particular order:

* i was travelling in new york
* i returned home and we had a houseguest for several days
* that houseguest left, and another took his place
* i've been collaborating with ian on a historical novel set in 18th century britain (this is untrue)
* i came down with a mad case of leprosy (also untrue)
* i've been busy beating the pants off of everyone in my football pool (so, so true)

my little sister (who i'll call "Annette") suggested that i post a link to her new photo site, where - among other less important things - she has started a section devoted to pictures of her niece, my daughter, Hannah.
